As I said in my last blog post about my goals for this year, I’m currently embarking on the ‘new year, new me‘ philosophy – and one of my goals is to lose weight.
Having friends who have personal trainers and nutritionists to help and guide them, I’ve picked up my fair share of helpful tips and tricks, but I’ve also found a few of my own dieting essentials that I think are really helping me with this process.
Now I can speak from experience when I say that there is no quick fix to losing weight, fad diets simply do not work, or at least, do not work for long. The only way to lose weight, and keep it off, is to eat a healthy, balanced diet & lots of exercise.
They say that it’s 80% diet and 20% exercise, now I don’t know how true that is, but I do know that you need to work on both parts in order to be successful. So cut the nonsense, stop buying those celebrity work out DVD’s, and those juice plus diets.. just eat right and move more, sounds simple enough, right? Well, we shall see.
My dieting essential #1 – Get yourself an Air Fryer, like now…
I couldn’t live without my Air Fryer, you can basically cook anything you want in it, no oil or fat – it’s quick and easy, saves on hundreds of calories & is just fab. I can never make sweet potato fries/wedges right in the oven – but if you cut up sweet potato’s into wedges and stick them in the air fryer, they come out perfectly. You can also cook meat & fish using it, as well as many other things – it’s also quicker than using an oven, no need to pre-heat etc just set the timer and the temperate and you’re away. It’s such a convenient way of cooking, and if you are trying to eat well, or are on a specific meal plan, it’s a handy appliance to have.
My Dieting Essential #2 – Download the Twinbody app, NOW!
This is such a good app for ANYBODY who is trying to lose weight, no matter whether it’s 10 pounds or 10 stones – this app really is for everyone. It’s basically like twitter, but for people who are losing weight. You have your own profile that people can follow, and you can post updates on your weight loss, meals, before and after photos etc. You can even amend your settings so that you are connected with people who are in a similar situation as you, for example, someone only wanting to lose 2 stones can set specific weight and goal attributes to find other people of a similar weight, looking to lose a similar amount to help support each other. Whoever created this app needs a pat on the back because it really is genius – dieting can be very hard when you’re going at it alone, so it’s great to be able to connect with people who are on the same journey as you, from all over the world.
My Dieting Essential #3 – Get yourself a Fitbit
I LOVE my Fitbit – the come in all different models, for different levels of fitness, starting off at beginner models, all the way up to athletes. This little device is brilliant because it monitors your daily exercise, steps, cardio, heart rate, sleep pattern, and much more. I’m currently using the Fitbit Charge Heart Rate, and it’s just right for me – it clocks up how many minutes I spend in the gym, how many calories I’ve burned, how many daily steps I’ve taken. The goal for healthy weight loss is to take 10,000 steps per day, so actually being able to monitor it means you know how far you have to go to reach the daily target. Not only this, but you can also set challenges between friends, or even between people you’ve interacted with on the Twinbody app. These challenges encourage you to get out and start walking, giving you goals and achievements – it turns boring exercise into something a bit more fun
My Dieting Essential #4 – Download the My Fitness Pal app
My Fitness Pal is a great little app that allows you to work out how many calories you should be consuming per day, based on your own personal body measurements, weight, height etc and it allows you to track everything that you eat each day in a diary, you search for the food, my fitness pal will have it – for example, if you eat Waitrose’s own hummous, you can type Waitrose hummous into the app, scroll through the list and find the product and it will provide all of its ingredients etc – add it to your diary for the day and it will work out how many calories/fats/sugar you have consumed. Calorie counting is really important when dieting, so this app keeps everything in one place for your to easily track your daily intake. It also takes into consideration any exercise you have done on that day, allowing you more calories for specific work outs etc.
My Dieting Essential #5 – Don’t drink your calories
Just drink water – and when you want to treat yourself have the diet or zero fizzy drinks options – water is so good for our bodies, we’re made up of between 50% – 60% of water and it really does help when losing weight. Don’t drink sugar drinks, or drinks with additives and flavourings, E numbers etc Water is as natural as it gets, make sure you drink plenty of water, every day, and it will help you to lose weight.
